As far I was concerned, she'd be home soon and that was all there was to it...
When I saw this site, I thought I would love to help but to be honest, I was not sure how. Then I thought, I’ll just write how it was, there might be someone else in a similar situation – you never know!
When was 11, my mum found out that she had breast cancer. She and my dad didn’t really tell me anything about it at the time, and it was only later that I realised it could have been serious. I’m 26 now, and everything is ok, thankfully. I guess I was quite sheltered from everything because mum and dad did not want to worry me. They’ve always been quite protective anyway and I guess to them, I was still a child and they just wanted me to get on with growing up. Probably too, they thought cancer was an adult thing. I’m not sure that I agree with that now, although I don’t know what I would have thought then. I know when I was 11 I thought I was so old - now that just makes me laugh!
To be honest, when I look back, it is all a bit fuzzy. The only thing I remember is visiting mum in hospital a couple of times, and not really understanding why she was there or the implications, and therefore not thinking about it too much. As far I was concerned, she'd be home soon and that was all there was to it.
It was ok for me I suppose because they caught the cancer early and the treatment worked great. She is fine now and has been for years. I know it is not like that for everyone.
I don't want to come across as flippant about the whole issue now as I’m sure to many people who use this site, it is all too real, and this account will sound very pathetic compared to what they're going through. But, that’s the way it was for me, and it might be like that for someone else too - you never know!
