Hello. I am Sarbi. I am starting year 10 of Secondary school in a couple days and I'm worrying on how I will be able to balance school and helping my mum. My mum has Breast Cancer (stage 3) and has had 1 chemotherapy session already. She was very tired the days following. I am told this year at school is very important because it's the last full year before our GCSE's. In the (near) future my mum will have surgery to remove her breasts as well as another place I don't specifically know where (I know it's to stop ovarian cancer because it's the same cancer strain as her breast cancer) and I would like some advice on how to balance school and helping her now and in the future as well as coping under all the pressure (I do not deal with stress very well. I have noticed I fidget when I'm stressed and find it hard to concentrate if I'm not fiddling with something) Any advice would be greatly appreciated
hi, I don't know whether this will be helpful? I usually write myself a list of what I need to do over a week or a day and write the absolute latest I need to get this done by next to it. once I get a plan together I find it easier to get stuff done. Also talk to you teachers as they may be able to give you extra time for homework if you struggle with that aspect. hope this helps :-)
Hi, if it helps I know exactly how you feel. My mums got secondary, terminal liver cancer and I found out a couple weeks ago half way through year 10. I guess I just try to talk to people I trust at school if I'm feeling stressed or down. If I can't cope in a lesson I just take a minute outside with a friend to calm down. Don't forget you can talk to your teachers too. Mine have been great and have extended deadlines if I'm worrying too much about exams. Hope this helps xxx
Hi, I am in year 11 and my mum has cancer and is going in for an operation tomorrow so I can empathise. Like others have said the best thing to do is talk to a teacher. Try and find one that you trust and explain what is going on. I'm sure they will understand and be able to help. A tutor or head of year (if you have those in your school) might be best as they can help you in other classes by informing teachers and other things. Hope this helps!
Hi, I’m 12 years old, in S1, and my mum has just had her surgery last week. As you can imagine I was really nervous and as it was on a school day I just couldn’t concentrate at all. Thankfully though my school and guidance teacher have been very supportive and let me take time out of class. They let me get extensions on homework and I am also very lucky to have a deputy head who’s mum has also had the same cancer as my mum. My advice would be that your school is always there for you and that they will understand that it is a lot to balance on your plate. Hope this helped some people :)
